Whale
Watching

Where nature is both an asset and a challenge. Gift vouchers valid if the sea cancels, a nautical channel manager synced with OTAs, a QR check-in app, and data by month, time slot and channel. So that the uncertainty of the sea does not translate into operational uncertainty.

Challenges Facing the Industry

Five Real Challenges. And How TuriTop Can Help

What sets a startup that’s been around for a quarter apart from one that’s been around for ten years. We tackle some challenges head-on; with others, we’re honest about what the software can’t do for you.

Challenge 1

Nature doesn't guarantee a spectacular show

It's up to the whale. If the tour doesn't spot any animals, the customer may leave with a negative review. Managing expectations beforehand and handling disappointment afterward is what sets apart operators who retain customers from those who don't.

How TuriTop Helps You (Partially)

  • Gift cards redeemable (validity is configurable): You can return them if the trip doesn't look likely
  • Email from your own domain with the bonus + animal welfare protocol
  • Customer-Initiated Changes: Select a New Date from the Email
  • Honest: the "no sighting → voucher" decision is up to you; TuriTop automates it once you enable it
Challenge 2

Comply with the regulations without looking like an NGO

There are strict rules on approach distance, observation time, outboard engines, no-flash photos. A single fine or a social-media perception of "harassment" can destroy years of reputation. Communicating respect for the animal is mandatory marketing.

How TuriTop Helps You (Partially)

  • Email Templates with Your Code of Conduct Before the Tour
  • Pre-approved text on the voucher: what we do, what we don't do
  • Let's be honest: TuriTop doesn't conduct inspections. But it helps ensure that the customer is well-informed.
  • The better the customer is, the less you'll ask for things that aren't possible
Challenge 3

Sell on 5 channels without overselling seats

Your website, GetYourGuide, Civitatis, Viator, and the port authority. Without real-time synchronization, you’ll find out on Friday that you’ve sold 14 spots on a boat that only holds 12. Leaving people behind is the worst possible image you can project for your business.

How TuriTop Can Help You

  • Channel Manager with Real-Time Synchronization
  • A booking made through any channel blocks the spot on the other channels
  • Capacity per exit is locked once the maximum is reached
  • Customer data captured across each channel · exportable to Google Sheets
Challenge 4

One peak season pays for twelve months of boat expenses

Whales follow their migratory routes. The peak season can last 4 months, and the other 8 months have to be filled however possible. The challenge is to align supply, pricing, and marketing with the cycle, without letting the winter season eat into your spring profit margin.

How TuriTop Can Help You

  • Prices vary by season (high / mid / low)
  • Gift certificates redeemable (validity is configurable). Order today, ships in the spring
  • Data by month and by hour to see which time slot converts best
  • Email the customer base when the peak season returns
Challenge 5

The skipper, who is also a biologist (and entertains)

Just knowing how to navigate isn't enough. Your guide has to identify species from 200 meters away, describe their behavior without anthropomorphizing them, and keep a group of tourists and two children entertained for two hours. That kind of person is very hard to find—and even harder to keep.

How TuriTop Helps You (Partially)

  • Mobile check-in app with the group list before departure (names, number)
  • Create a user for each skipper with their own permissions
  • Customer information collected at the time of booking (customizable fields)
  • Let's be honest: TuriTop doesn't hire for you. But it cuts down the paperwork that burns people out.

What TuriTop Does for Your Trip

Six features designed for birdwatching

Real, from the bank

Gift Certificates for Climate Resilience/Wildlife Viewing

Vouchers redeemable (validity is configurable). When a trip is delayed or the weather gets in the way, you can convert the booking into a voucher, and the customer can choose another date. The sale is postponed—it’s not lost.

Education + Expectations

Previous email from your own domain

The confirmation email is sent from your domain with the text you choose: a list of likely species, what to bring (binoculars, sunscreen, a coat), and guidelines for respecting the animals.

Clear Logistics

Pickup System and Meeting Point

GPS coordinates, marina, exact time, prices by pickup location. Includes location on Google Maps. Your customer won't have to call to ask where it is.

+30 languages

Multilingual system (+30 languages)

Reach international tourists with a calendar, checkout process, and automated emails in their language. The language is recorded on the booking and comes through in the export.

Distribution

Channel Manager with +70 OTAs

Synchronize real-time availability with GetYourGuide, Viator, Civitatis, Musement, Tiqets, Booking.com, and local platforms. No overbooking, no separate Excel spreadsheet.

Decisions backed by data

Data by booking and season

Data for each booking: which time slots fill up fastest, which months generate the most bookings, which OTA brings in the most customers. You decide the schedule based on data, not on hunches (you’re the one who records wildlife sightings; TuriTop doesn’t identify species).

You're not alone at sea

Your job is the whales. Ours is to make sure the office isn't the bottleneck.

TuriTop manages the sightings calendar, per-departure lists, the gift vouchers once you decide there was no sighting, sync with nautical +70 OTAs, and the animal-respect briefing that reaches the customer before the tour. Your team spends its energy on the one thing that can't be delegated:understanding the species and reading the sea.

Frequently Asked Questions

Questions We Get from Wildlife Tour Operators

What happens if a customer books a tour and no whales are spotted during the trip?

TuriTop doesn't detect sightings for you (that call is yours at the end of the tour), but it does automate the response once you make it: you convert the booking into a gift voucher redeemable (validity is configurable) with a couple of clicks, and an automated email goes out from your own domain to the customer with the decision and the code. The customer then picks a new date using self-service change management from that email. The review shifts from "we didn't see anything and I got upset" to "we didn't see anything but they invited me back." Without your team picking up the phone.

Can I set different turnaround times depending on the ship?

There is no separate turnaround field: it goes inside the trip duration. If the watching trip runs 3 h and you need 60 minutes to clean and refuel, you declare 4 h. Each vessel is a resource, so it stays taken for all of that and that window is not for sale. That time slot is not sold. Your captain authorizes the next group’s boarding by scanning the ticket’s QR code using the mobile check-in app. The 11:00 a.m. delay no longer affects the 2:00 p.m. departure.

How do I avoid overbooking when selling on GetYourGuide, Civitatis, and my website?

The Channel Manager syncs availability in real time between your website and +70 OTAs, nautical and general (Civitatis, GetYourGuide, Viator, Tiqets, Tripadvisor, local platforms). When someone confirms a booking on any channel, that spot is automatically blocked on the rest. Leaving people ashore stops depending on human error.

How do I address the animal welfare policy in communications with customers?

The confirmation email includes a customizable "respect protocol" block: minimum approach distance, maximum observation time, no flash photography, no hands in the water, expected group behavior. The better prepared the customer arrives, the less you'll have to ask for what isn't allowed. Good upfront communication also protects your reputation if an inspection arrives.

Can I assign specific skippers to each outing?

Yes. You create a user for each skipper with their permissions and manually assign each outing to a specific skipper. The skipper opens the mobile check-in app before setting out and sees the group list with names, headcount, customer language, and any custom fields you requested when booking.

How is a booking charged? Full payment or a deposit?

Both options are configured on a per-product basis. We recommend the following: regular tours with full payment upon booking (to prevent no-shows, especially during peak season); premium or private experiences with a 30% deposit upon booking and the balance due on the day of the tour. Extras (photo of the sighting, food on board, transfer) are added at checkout. They are not charged at the dock.

Can I manage gift cards in such a seasonal industry?

Yes, and they’re your best ally for generating revenue from the off-season to the peak season. The customer purchases the gift certificate at any time of year, and the recipient chooses the date when the species is in the area. You set the validity period. You bill today, and the group fills up during the season that works best for you.
